Graphic

Recording

These are the stages of approach to my Graphic Recording, and they cross over into every project I take on:

  • I research themes and premeditate concepts that might arise. I examine tensions in general public understanding of those themes and draw up a small inventory of visual metaphors that might work well when we go live.

  • The homework sets the scene for me to hit a relaxed balance between attentive listening to the speaker and the careful internal reasoning needed to clearly map out the discussion as it happens.

  • After checking in about any further requirements or nice-to-haves on the final document (conventionally finished as a digital image file - or a small series of them) - I deliver the product in the format discussed.

Digital Graphic Notetaking: My Girlfriend Dolly

My Girlfriend Dolly is a humour podcast that reflects on the 1990s Australian mainstream media’s stranglehold on notions of health and identity as held by schoolgirls of the time.

To me, the material is fascinating, and it yearns for a fun and specific visual language to bring out the speakers’ meaning.

In this extract, hosts Heidi and Jessa discuss

I transcribe this extract in real time, without previous exposure to the episode - as though I were notetaking at a live recording, in person.
